2020 U.S. Open third round live stream: how to watch Winged Foot for free

The third round of the U.S. Open golf championship gets underway at 1:55p.m. BST today. Here’s our guide on how to watch all the action from the fearsome Winged Foot course in Mamaroneck, New York. And, if you’re really lucky, you’ll be able to watch the 2020 U.S. Open live stream free!

Those lucky golf fans in the US can watch the 2020 U.S. Open for free on NBCSports, NBC Golf and the NBC video player Peacock TV. (Don’t forget to use a VPN if you’re a U.S. citizen stuck away from home.) In the UK you’ll need a Sky Sports subscription or Now TV pass.

Winged Foot finally bared its teeth in yesterday’s second round, with greens hardening and the wind picking up considerably after a rather benign opening day. So the fearsome course is now living up to its reputation, and the U.S. Open can relax: it’s still the toughest of all the majors.

Round two saw only three players shoot under par, and the lead come down from an overnight -5 to -4. Ironically, given the nature of the course, power hitter Bryson DeChambeau is right up there at the top, just a shot behind the leader Patrick Reed. That pairing is last to tee off today, at 7:25p.m. BST.

Conditions are unlikely to get any easier – it’s almost enough to make us feel sorry for the world’s best golfers; almost. But Saturday is moving day, so there are bound to be plenty of ups and downs during what will inevitably be a tricky day for most. As golf great Bobby Jones said: “Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half inch course, the space between your ears.” A U.S. Open at Winged Foot is proof of that.

Read on to make sure you know how to watch a U.S. Open live stream wherever you are.

Watch the 2020 U.S. Open golf from abroad using a VPN

Even if you have subscribed to the relevant services, you won’t be able to use them when outside your own country. The service will know your location based on your IP address, and will automatically block your access.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) helps you get around this obstacle. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and the internet, such that the servers and services you’re accessing aren’t aware of what you’re doing. All the information passing back and forth is entirely encrypted.

There are many VPN providers out there, with some more reliable and safe than others. As a rule, we’d suggest a paid-for service such as ExpressVPN or NordVPN.

ExpressVPN three months free with a year-long plan
You can get three months free when you sign up to a year-long plan, bringing VPN access to smart devices including the Amazon Fire TV Stick, laptops, TVs and both Android and iOS mobiles and tablets. Express also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.View Deal

Once you’ve made your choice, all you need to do is sign in to your VPN service through whichever device you’d like to use to watch the match. When prompted to select a server, you need to pick one which is based in the country whose content you’d like to access. Then navigate to the relevant video streaming app or website and you’re in.
