Definitive Technology and Polk Audio parent company Sound United has announced that several speaker models from both brands are the first to become IMAX Enhanced certified. The newly certified speakers include the Definitive Technology Demand D17, D15, and D5c, and Polk Audio Legend L800, L600, and L400.
According to a joint press release from IMAX and Sound United, the design of the certification process emerged from a partnership between IMAX and DTS with sound mixers in the Hollywood film production community, along with industry experts including Polk and Def Tech engineers.
“Our intent in joining the loudspeaker certification program was to reproduce the signature IMAX sound without compromise. It was essential to preserve the impact and dynamics moviegoers have come to expect from IMAX, therefore, we considered sound pressure level (SPL), frequency response and the consistency of the speaker’s performance when evaluating eligibility for loudspeaker certification,” said Matt Lyons, VP of Engineering – Acoustics Product Development & Engineering at Polk Audio. “IMAX defined a specific set of frequency ranges to be used for testing, which we then ultimately measured against speaker performance. The resulting certification completes the ecosystem of IMAX Enhanced products including content, devices and loudspeakers, all calibrated to offer the level of performance IMAX demands.”
The release further states that new IMAX Enhanced certified products are on their way
from the Sound United brand portfolio, which includes Denon, Marantz, Classé, Boston Acoustics, along with the company’s most recent addition, Bowers & Wilkins. No details were given other than products “will be announced at a later date.”
